This study aims to assess the potentials and challenges of sustainable tourism utilization of historical castles and forts in the Cyrenaica region (Barqa) of Libya, and to propose strategies for their development. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, reviewing literature and previous studies, and analyzing the current situation of the sites based on available reports and observations. The study found that the Cyrenaica region possesses a rich and diverse heritage of castles and forts, representing significant potential for heritage tourism. However, most of these sites suffer from severe physical deterioration, neglect, and lack of maintenance, posing the main challenge. The study also revealed the absence of organized tourism exploitation and integrated management plans. The study concluded the necessity of adopting a sustainable approach based on integrated strategies including phased conservation and rehabilitation, infrastructure development, engaging the local community as a key partner, developing innovative tourism products, and enhancing institutional management and coordination. The study recommended developing a national heritage tourism strategy, launching a program for documenting and restoring priority sites, empowering local communities, and supporting scientific research and awareness of this heritage's importance.
