The Sabat within the Urban Fabric of the Old City of Tripoli: An Archaeological – Architectural Analytical Study of Selected Examples

This study addresses the phenomenon of the sabat as a traditional urban solution that contributed significantly to shaping the urban fabric of the Old City of Tripoli. The research adopts a historical- architect analytical approach to examine the role of the Sabat in organizing urban space، highlighting its functional، environmental، and social dimensions. The study aims to investigate the origin and development of the Sabat، analyze its architectural characteristics، and evaluate its role in improving the microclimatic particularly in terms of providing shade، regulating movement enhancing privacy، and strengthening. Special attention is given to the relationship between the Sabat and the surrounding urban fabric، emphasizing its contribution to urban cohesion and structural stability within the traditional city. The research relies on a descriptive- analytical methodology supported by historical literature review and documented field surveys، along with an analysis of selected Sabat models within the Old City of Tripoli. The findings indicate that the Sabat is not merely a structural or covered passage، but rather an integrated urban system that reflects a deep understanding of the local environment and societal needs، contributing to the achievement of sustainability concepts. The study concludes that the Sabat represents an architectural and heritage value that can be effectively integrated into contemporary architectural practices، whether in the conservation of historic cities or in the design of sustainable urban environments adapted to local climate and cultural context. Accordingly، the importance of documenting، preserving، and rehabilitating the Sabat as an essential component of the Old Cith of Tripoli، and incorporating it within strategies for urban heritage conservation and sustainable development.
