Abstract

This research aims to provide an in-depth analytical examination of the phenomenon of nostalgia from both psychological and sociological perspectives, within the context of the rapid transformations and social, cultural, and political changes that characterize the contemporary world and significantly influence individuals and societies. The research focuses on exploring the nature of nostalgia, its psychological and social motivations, and its various functions and roles. Special attention is given to analyzing its manifestations within Libyan society, which has experienced profound transformations and crises in recent years, leaving a clear impact on collective consciousness and national identity. The research adopts an analytical literature review approach through the examination of relevant scientific literature and psychological and sociological studies, as well as the analysis of concepts and theories explaining nostalgia. Furthermore, it reviews the most prominent expressions of nostalgia in Libyan cultural, media, and social discourse. The research also investigates the relationship between nostalgia and both individual and collective identity, highlighting its role as a psychological mechanism that helps individuals cope with pressures and crises, while also contributing to the enhancement of social belonging, social cohesion, and collective memory. The findings indicate that nostalgia represents a complex human phenomenon encompassing psychological, social, and cultural dimensions. It performs several positive functions, including strengthening feelings of belonging, maintaining psychological continuity, and reinforcing social bonds, particularly during periods of crisis and instability. However, the research also reveals that excessive idealization of the past or its uncritical recollection may hinder adaptation to present realities and limit opportunities for renewal and development. Therefore, a conscious and balanced approach to nostalgia is required—one that benefits from its psychological and cultural value while remaining open to the demands of the present and the prospects of the future. Such an approach can contribute to building a society that is more capable of adaptation, stability, and sustainable growth.
