A Study of Certain Physical, Chemical, and Biological Properties of Treated Water at the Wastewater Treatment Plant of the Libyan Iron and Steel Company – Misrata
Keywords:
Treatment plant, Wastewater, Electrical Conductivity, Ammonia, Coliform BacteriaAbstract
This study was conducted to characterize the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the treated effluent from the wastewater treatment plant at the Libyan Iron and Steel Company (Misrata) between March 1, 2022, and March 1, 2023. It aimed to assess the suitability of the treated water for various uses by performing periodic tests and analyses, and by comparing the results against local and international standards as well as the plant's design specifications. Several physical, chemical, and biological properties were assessed, namely: temperature (t), total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity (TU), pH, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate (NO3), nitrite (NO2), ammonia (NH3), total hardness (TH), chloride (Cl⁻), and total coliform bacteria and *E. coli*. The mean concentrations obtained were compared against local and international standards as well as the plant's design specifications. The results for t, TSS, TU, pH, NO3, NO2, BOD, and COD fell within permissible limits or slightly exceeded them; however, the mean concentrations for TDS, EC, NH3, total coliform bacteria, and *E. coli* significantly exceeded the permissible limits.
