Abstract

This study aimed to conduct an in-depth economic analysis of the determinants of fish meat demand in the Libyan city of Tobruk, within the context of challenges facing the fisheries sector in the region, such as the lack of modern storage facilities and weak marketing channels. The study adopted a descriptive and quantitative methodology, collecting primary data through a questionnaire administered to a sample of 219 household heads in the city. The data was statistically analyzed using the SPSS software to estimate the standard demand function for the quantity of fish meat consumed. The analytical results revealed several key determinants influencing consumption patterns. The descriptive analysis showed that the vast majority of the sample (approximately 78.1%) had a medium to high educational level, and 40.6% fell into the low-income category, suggesting potential price sensitivity. Furthermore, the primary motivation for fish consumption was found to be Health Benefit (45.2%), followed by the desire for Dietary Diversification (17.4%). On the economic level, the results indicated that approximately 52.51% of consumers were not affected by price fluctuations in their purchasing decisions, reflecting a relative loyalty to the product or a purchasing power that allows them to overlook price changes. Conversely, about 47.49% reported being affected by prices, with 17.81% reducing the quantities purchased when prices rise. The study also confirmed that the socio-economic variables, represented by individual total expenditure and individual consumption of red meat, explain about 91.1% of the variation in individual fish demand. The study recommends investing marketing efforts in promoting awareness of the health benefits of fish, and developing the storage and distribution infrastructure to reduce waste and improve product quality. It also stresses the importance of considering the price sensitivity of a large segment of consumers when formulating pricing and promotional strategies.
