Arches and Buttresses in the Urban Alleys of the Old City of Tripoli: An Analytical Architectural Study

This study examines arches and buttresses as fundamental architectural and structural elements shaping urban alleys within the historic fabric of the old city of Tripoli, Libya It aims to highlight their role in achieving integration their role in achieving integration between architectural form and structural stability through a field – based analytical study of an existing case. The research adopts a descriptive- analytical approach supported by direct observation and photographic documentation. Lt analyzes the characteristics of arches in terms of form and repetition, as well functioning as implicit mass buttresses the findings indicate that arches contribute to organizing urban space and creating a rhythmic spatial sequence, while buttresses resist lateral forces and enhance wall stability. The study also demonstrates that these elements perform integrated functions, including structural support, spatial organization, and climatic improvement through shading. lt concludes that integrated architectural system, and that understanding their role is essential architecture and the development of sustainable restoration strategies in historic environments.
