The prophets (ﷺ) preference for Beginning with the Right: An Analytical Hadith Study

Abstract

Beginning with the right side is one of the established practices of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which he loved and preferred in many aspects of his life. This practice is supported by authentic hadiths, among the most well-known of which is the narration of ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) liked to begin with the right side when putting on his sandals, combing his hair, performing purification, and in all his affairs.” This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Beginning with the right means giving precedence to the right side in actions associated with honor, dignity, and adornment, such as putting on clothes and footwear, combing the hair, entering the mosque, shaking hands, and performing other commendable acts. However, in matters considered unpleasant or involving the removal of impurities, it is recommended to begin with the left side, such as entering the restroom, cleansing oneself after relieving oneself, and removing footwear. The wisdom behind the Prophet’s preference for beginning with the right lies in honoring and elevating the right side, demonstrating respect, encouraging discipline, and training Muslims to follow the Prophet’s example in their daily lives. Observing this Sunnah also strengthens a Muslim’s love and reverence for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and reinforces the commitment to following his guidance in matters both minor and major. This study examines the concept of beginning with the right side and the hadiths establishing its legitimacy. It analyzes their chains of transmission and wording, clarifies their meanings, and derives the relevant rulings and benefits. It also identifies the situations in which beginning with the right is recommended and those in which the left should be given precedence, while highlighting the underlying Islamic wisdom in light of scholarly opinions. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the Prophetic Sunnah’s concern with refining Muslim conduct in every aspect of life. It emphasizes that beginning with the right is not merely a custom, but an intentional Prophetic practice embodying honor, good manners, compliance with Islamic teachings, and adherence to the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in all matters, whether minor or significant.
