Abstract

This study aims to analyze the current state of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies use in Libyan higher education institutions, focusing on the perspectives of computer faculty members due to their expertise and in-depth knowledge of the technology. The research methodology employs a descriptive-analytical approach, based on an online questionnaire distributed to a select group of faculty members at El-Mergib University. The results revealed a relatively high level of awareness of AI concepts among participants; however, the practical application of these concepts within the educational process remains limited, primarily confined to specific uses such as contributing to scientific research and explaining concepts. The study also highlighted a significant gap between the theoretical potential of these technologies and their practical application, a gap attributed to several obstacles. The most prominent of these challenges are the lack of technological infrastructure and weak internet connectivity, insufficient financial resources to support this transformation, and the absence of institutional policies and strategic plans that encourage the adoption of AI. In addition, there are challenges related to skills and training gaps, as well as ethical considerations associated with the use of these technologies. The paper concludes by offering several recommendations to policymakers, educational institutions, and faculty members, with the aim of promoting the responsible and effective adoption of artificial intelligence technologies, thereby contributing to enhancing and developing the quality of higher education in Libya.
